Daily - The Press Register and the Mobile Historic Development Commission have organized preservation questions to appear in the newspaper each day throughout all of May.  

May 2 Unveiling of the Preserve America at the Mobile City Council Meeting. Government Plaza, 10:30.  Last year Mobile was named a Preserve America City and will be installing the signs during Preservation Month.  Come be the first to see these signs which will go up all over Mobile.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission, 208-7281, www.mobilehd.org

May 3 -- Tour of Church Street Graveyard, Wednesday, 12:10 – 12:50.  John Sledge will lead a tour of the oldest graveyard in Mobile.  Come and see the graves of some of Mobile’s most prominent citizens including Joe Cain, Eugene Walters and the builder of Oakleigh.  Learn about the history of the cemetery and the ongoing restoration work.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission, 208-7281, www.mobilehd.org

May 15Caravan Tour of the Oakleigh Venture Revolving Fund Properties.  Over the last several years a number of preservation projects have been accomplished primarily in the Oakleigh Garden District by a group of private citizens led by Palmer Hamilton.  Mr. Hamilton will give a tour beginning at 5:30 with his newest project located in downtown at Dauphin and Cedar Streets (500 block of Dauphin).  Everyone will then caravan to the intersection of Church and Marine Streets where we will walk down Marine seeing various projects and getting into a couple of properties still under construction.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission 208-7281 or www.mobilehd.org.

May 17 -- All things Paint:  Wednesday, Lunchtime talk:  12:10 – 12:50 at the offices of the Mobile Arts Council, 318 Dauphin Street (Facing Cathedral Square, next to Spot of Tea).  Hank Hays, technical director of BLP Mobile Paints will talk about the development of historical colors along with the unique challenges of painting historic buildings.  Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission, 208-7281, www.mobilehd.org

May 18The Future of Downtown Living:  Thursday, 5:15 – 7:00.  Pre-view tours for St. Louis Lofts and St. Emanuel Place.  The newest proposal for condominium living in downtown Mobile is the lofts at 308 St. Louis Street.  This is the first opportunity to see the “before” space, talk to the developers, and learn about the “finished” space.  St. Emanuel Place contains apartments located at the corner of Dauphin and St. Emanuel Streets.  Gather at 127 Dauphin and visit the units under construction and scheduled to open this summer.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission, 208-7281, www.mobilehd.org

May 24Insuring your Historic Home and Flood Insurance for Mobile.  Lunchtime session:  12:10 – 12:50 at the offices of the Mobile Arts Council, 318 Dauphin Street (Facing Cathedral Square, next to Spot of Tea).  Ken McElhaney, an agent for State Farm Insurance and a member of the Mobile Historic Development Commission, will clear up some of the mysteries concerning insurance in the historic districts as well as provide timely information on hurricane and flood insurance.  Now is the time to ask those questions.  Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.  Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission, 208-7281, www.mobilehd.org

May 8 -- Preservation Party and Annual Meeting, 5 to 8 p.m. Seated dinner and entertainment at LeStrade (behind Spot of Tea). Business meeting, 5-5:15 p.m. Guest speaker Pratt Cassity, 5:15 to 6 p.m. Live auction featuring Belle Cadeaux, 6 to 7 p.m. Music and socializing, 7 to 8 p.m. (Mobile native Pratt Cassity is Director of Public Service and Outreach in the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia.
 
May 9 -- Artists' Eye View of Oakleigh, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Art teachers and students will be creating their artistic impressions of Oakleigh House Museum in various media including oil, pastel, sculpture and photography. Admission, students and teachers, $3 (includes lunch); public admission, $10 (lunch available with advance order, $5.) Artists welcome to bring chair and easel to join student and teacher artists. May 13 -- Hands-On Preservation Art, 2 to 6:30 p.m., Arts Alive on Conti Street. Artists affiliated with the Bay Area Arts Educators Association will demonstrate and display work and children can create make-and-take coloring sheets of Oakleigh and Barton Academy. May 29 -- "Turn Back the Clock with the Baybears," noon until at Hank Aaron Stadium. Join Historic Mobile Preservation dressed in the style of your favorite historic era (from tiger skins and togas to hoop skirts and blue jeans) for a special Memorial Day celebration. The Baybears (playing in the 1937 Mobile Bears uniforms) will square off against the Birmingham (Chicago White Sox).  Admission includes picnic in GasLight Park, special activities and admission to evening's game.  HMPS members, $15; non-members, $20.
