Celebrates Preservation Month in May 2007


Wednesday, May 9

Noonday Tour of the Church Street Grave Yard. Presented by John Sledge, author of Cities of Silence. Experience one of the oldest grave yards in the South, led by one of Alabama’s finest writers. BYOB (bag lunch, that is). Drinks provided. Tour begins at noon at the entrance of the Church Street Grave Yard at Scott Street. Sponsored by the MHDC. Free and open to the public. Saturday, May 12

The Battle House. Be among the first to tour this renowned historic hotel recently renovated by the Retirement System of Alabama. 26 Royal Street. Tours will begin at 3:00 and end at 7:00 p.m. This will be the first chance for the general public to see this historic building.


Saturday, May 19


Day Trip to New Orleans. Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission. Journey to the heart of the French Quarter to the Historic New Orleans Collection to experience its special exhibit Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana: Treasures from the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, led by the curator, Albert E. Lemmon. Also on view is Culinary Traditions of the Crescent City. Afterward, lunch with fellow food enthusiasts at Chef Susan Spicer’s restaurant, Bayona, and hear John Magill speak on the history of floods in New Orleans. Cost: $50.00 per person, including lunch. Drinks not included. Space is limited. For more information, call 208-7281. Sponsored by the Mobile Historic Development Commission. Gather at 7:45 at 350 St. Joseph Street (City Hall North). The bus will leave promptly at 8:00. Plan on returning no later than 6:00 p.m.

The Little House, a reading of the preservation tale- Dawn Davis (3rd Grade teacher at Old Shell Road Elementary). Noon at the Mobile Arts Council, 316 Dauphin Street. Free. BYOL, Bring your lunch, drinks provided.


Thursday, May 24

Protecting Historic Downtowns and Neighborhoods, City Council Chamber, Government Plaza, 205 Government Street. The Alabama Historical Commission, the Mobile Historic Development Commission and Certified Local Government Program will present a seminar on historic districts and the Review Board process. The 2007 forum will focus on design review guidelines as a tool to protect local historic districts. Georgia planner Monica Callahan will be the featured presenter. In conjunction with the seminar, a special session of Mobile’s Architectural Review Board will be held in the afternoon. Registration is $15 and includes lunch for reservations made by May 21. Registration begins at 9:00 with the conference starting at 9:30. Mail registration to: AHC, 168 S. Perry St., Montgomery, AL 36130-0900 Attn: Mary Shell. Dedication of African American Heritage Trail, Most Pure Heart of Mary, 304 Stengstak Street. Come to the dedication of the first of a series of markers celebrating the contributions of African Americans to Mobile. 1:00 p.m.



2006 Events

Learn about Mobile’s colorful history and intriguing architecture! The Mobile Historic Development Commission invites you to attend its annual Preservation Leadership Training Class. Classes will be held on Tuesday nights for six weeks from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Mobile Municipal Archives Building, located at 457 Church Street. (Parking available at the Archives and across the street at the Chamber of Commerce) Staff of the MHDC and guest speakers will present entertaining, non-technical lectures on a wide range of preservation topics.
