Africatown Archaeology UnderwayFriday, Jul 16, 2010 Dr. Neil Norman of the College of William and Mary and several of his students have begun two projects in the Africatown area of north Mobile. Working on a grant from County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood through the Museum of Mobile, the group is continuing the work begun this winter in mapping the Plateau Cemetery. Through the MHDC, Dr. Norman and crew are investigating two home sites of Africans brought on the Chlotilde. They have begun preliminary test shovels and one site and will continue there and begin at another. The two projects are going simultaneously with Keri Coumanis and other MHDC staff members deeply involved with the project. The project is being funded by a grant from the Alabama Historical Commission matched by the City of Mobile through the efforts of Councilman William Carroll and Mayor Sam Jones.
