The City of Mobile's Historic Development Department will host an in-person Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®) Resilience and Disaster Training program on August 14, 2023. CAMP will be conducted in an air-conditioned facility in the Automobile Alley National Register district. There is an opportunity to receive American Institute of Architects (AIA). American Planning Association (APA), and American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) continuing education credits.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Disaster Planning and Recovery for Historic Communities
  • Risk Assessment and Documentation
  • Pre-Adaption and Post-Disaster Rehabilitation
  • Economics of Disaster Planning
  • Public Engagement in Disaster Adaptation and Recovery
  • Applying Design Review Standards to Disaster Adaptation and Recovery

Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®) is the signature training offered by the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC). CAMP is led by qualified preservation professionals in support of NAPC's mission to “build strong local preservation programs through education, advocacy, and training.” Trainers include commissioners, local, state and national staff members, attorneys, consultants and commission partners. The goal of CAMP is to provide high-quality, engaging and informative training to preservation-related boards and commissions of all types through presentations, hands-on exercises, group discussions, networking, and mentoring. We also encourage elected officials and other municipal, county, and state agency staff members to attend.

Free registration is required by August 7. Contact Christine Dawson at christine.dawson@cityofmobile.org or (251) 208-7281 with any questions.

CAMP Resilience and Disaster Planning® is a cutting edge training program geared toward preservation commissioners, staff, preservation leaders, and practitioners at the local level working to preserve cultural resources in the face of disaster events. The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) developed this training, which is modeled in the same format as the nationally renowned Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®).

An exceptional team of CAMP Trainers will lead engaging presentations and group discussions, customized to address the protection of Alabama’s irreplaceable cultural resources from the impacts of hurricanes and other disasters. There will also be opportunities for networking throughout the training. Trainees will leave with NAPC’s Resilience and Disaster Planning Digital Toolkit, a comprehensive and ever-growing collection of resilience and disaster planning resources to utilize moving forward. Each trainee will also receive a complimentary one-year membership with NAPC, a valuable opportunity to stay informed about preservation at the local level.

This training is eligible for continuing education credit through the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of City Planners. Certificates of Completion are also available by request.
