Review Board Member Duties

Members of the ARB are expected to attend two meetings a month, the first and third Wednesdays at 3:00. Depending on the agenda, the meetings are usually over by 5:00 though they have on occasion gone past 6:00. By the meeting, a Board member is expected to have examined the agenda with staff reports and visited the property under consideration.

Board members are occasionally asked to serve on various committees to do the work of the Board. By State law, each Board member should attend at least two training sessions a year. Every two years, the Board is given the opportunity to attend a National Alliance of Preservation Commissions conference at the expense of the Mobile Historic Development Commission.

The Board sits as a quasi-judicial body and as such acts almost like a judge. No Board member should discuss a pending application with anyone including other Board members. Questions about the application should be directed to staff. If a member of the ARB or a relative has a financial interest in a pending case, that person should recuse himself from the meeting during the period the application is being discussed.

Board members do not receive any pay but may be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses.
